Italian Open: Kerber, Murray crash out; Setback for Sharapova

Anett Kontaveit defeated Angelique Kerber in the second round on Wednesday as the Italian Open lost both its top seeds, with men’s No. 1 Andy Murray falling to Fabio Fognini on Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, Maria Sharapova retired from her second-round match against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, just hours after she was denied a wild card for Roland Garros.

Defeat meant the 30-year-old also missed out on a chance to make the main draw at Wimbledon, which she could have achieved by reaching the semifinals here.
